Name: Dominique Luster
Year in Program: second semester MLIS
Specialization: Archives and Information Management
What is your title?
SIS/ULS Diversity Intern and Resident
What does a typical day at position look like?
Fortunately and unfortunately I do not have a typical day. Over the course of the year I will rotate for 2-6 weeks at a time through about a dozen ULS departments including Preservation, Special Collections and Archives, Reference, and Administration. So a typical day in every department is different depending on the tasks that make up the functions of that department.
How does this position relate to your future goals?
This position has greatly impacted my future goals because when I entered the program I was very determined about what I wanted to do with my career. However, after having kept an open mind while working in certain departments so far this year I believe my focus is changing…but I won’t give away towards what.
How are you managing your time effectively?
I’m not.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Hands down I work with the kindest, most generous and most passionate ULS staff whom have all been welcoming and invested in my education.
Do you have any advice from prospective students?
Not all Library schools are weighted equal by potential employers. This profession (like most others) is all about who you know so your choice of where you start off in the profession and the professors/curriculum you are associated with could make a great deal of difference.
Are there any questions that I should have asked?
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve found in the archives? A LOT of cat photos!
